2-Phenoxyethanol, also known as EPH, is an organic compound with the formula C8H10O2, which is synthesized by etherification of ethylene glycol and phenol. The appearance is colorless and slightly viscous liquid, with aromatic odor, slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in ethanol and sodium hydroxide. 2-Phenoxyethanol is a kind of high boiling point, high permeability, low volatility solvent, it can dissolve in water, but also can dissolve in oil, easy to use. Therefore, in recent years, it has been used more and more frequently in the light industrial daily chemical industry.
The production process of EPH: in the presence of sodium acetate or sodium peroxide, phenol and ethylene oxide are added to the reaction, and the reaction product is then distilled under vacuum.
2-Phenoxyethanol’s properties of antibacterial, low toxicity, and chemical inactivity to copper and lead (commonly used with quaternary ammonium salts) , have led to its frequent use as a substitute for the highly toxic sodium azide in biological buffer solutions, and as a preservative in cosmetics, skin care products, vaccines, and pharmaceuticals.
